A fire that broke out on Friday night razed at least 39 shops at the Kaura Modern Market in Abuja.
The inferno, caused by an electrical spark from a power changeover device installed in one of the stores, started at 11 p.m. and burned for hours before firefighters from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service (FFS) arrived at the scene. They managed to douse the flame at 2 a.m. on Saturday.
The situation was exacerbated by a petrol-filled generator inside the store, which rapidly spread the flames.
The items lost in the inferno include food items, generators, refrigerators, fruits, umbrellas, electrical devices, household items, and sections of the market’s roof.
