At least 40 soldiers were killed, and others injured, in an attack on a military base by Boko Haram militants in Chad’s Lake region, near the Nigerian border, officials said on Monday.
A statement from the Chadian presidency revealed that “a garrison housing more than 200 soldiers was targeted by members of Boko Haram.”
The attack resulted in the deaths of around 40 soldiers, with others sustaining injuries.
Boko Haram, an extremist group that began its insurgency in northeastern Nigeria in 2009, has caused widespread devastation across the region.
The conflict has claimed more than 350,000 lives and displaced millions, with its effects spreading beyond Nigeria into neighbouring countries, including Chad.
