Troops of the Nigerian army have rattled bandits in Kundu, a Niger State community where at least 50 of them were gunned down and several others fled with serious injuries.
Kundu village near Zungeru in Wushishi Local Government Area of the state has been terrorised by the bandits, leading to troops deploying to stamp them out.
The bandits were said to have settled in the area after rustling cows and other domestic animals from the communities in the area. Some senior military officers also lost their lives to the bandits after coming under fire on Sunday.
The bandits killed 13 on Sunday night while 8 others were killed by the bandits, yesterday after laying siege for the military men, who were on a rescue mission to the area.
A distress call had gone to the security on the invasion of the bandits in the area in their attempt to escape with their livestock to other neighbouring states.
In a rapid response, the security men blocked the miscreants’ route at Kundu as they were trying to escape but the bandits, who had been informed ahead laid ambush and opened fire on them. At least five vigilante members from the area also suffered injuries from the firework of the bandits.
The corpses of the military men had been deposited at the Zungeru Federal Medical Centre.
Meanwhile, preliminary investigations has commenced to determine the probable cause of the Nigerian Air Force helicopter MI-171 which crashed while on a casualty evacuation mission, yesterday, about 1p.m., near Chukuba Village in Niger State.
