Residents of Ruhumuro Sub County in Bushenyi District, Uganda, are worried about a strange disease outbreak that has so far affected over sixty families.
The disease broke out two weeks ago, and has spread to several villages, including Ekikoreijo one, Nyeibingo A, and Karama.
John Tumuheise, the Ruhumuro Sub County Chairperson, said people were initially scared to report the outbreak, and now many are ill. He suspects it might be Anthrax, as many animals have died recently.
Victims have reported symptoms like skin sores, swelling, wounds, severe headaches, and fever.
Arthur Tuhame, one of the victims, described it as starting with small sores that become widespread wounds, causing intense pain.
Dr Edward Mwesigye, the Bushenyi District Health Officer, said they have not yet identified the disease, but samples have been sent to the Entebbe government laboratory for testing.
Residents are advised to avoid close contact, take the sick to hospitals, and wash hands with clean water and soap. Authorities may restrict movement in affected areas to contain the outbreak.
Robert Atuhairwe, the Bushenyi District Resident District Commissioner, said they are working with medical teams, local leaders, and neighbouring districts to prevent the disease from spreading further. There are also reports that the disease may have spread to Buhweju District, but this is still being confirmed by local authorities.
