Floods have directly affected 88,000 people across 13 of Sudan’s 18 states since the rainy season began in July, Stephane Dujarric, the UN Secretary-General’s spokesman, has s aid.

During his remarks at the UN headquarters in New York, Dujarric said that humanitarian partners were assessing the needs and verifying the status of the people affected and had begun delivering lifesaving assistance.

“They are also using prepositioned supplies in Gedaref, West Darfur, South Darfur and North Kordofan state.

“As of Wednesday, a total of 4,800 homes were destroyed, another 12,780 homes were damaged, and public infrastructure facilities and farmlands have been impacted.

“Heavy rains are expected to intensify across most of the country this week, driving more flooding, particularly in the eastern, central and western regions,’’ he said.

Dujarric said colleagues at the UN Mission in Libya had expressed grave concern over armed clashes in Salaheddine, a densely populated area in Tripoli’s capital.

“The Mission calls for the immediate cessation of hostilities and calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint.

“It reminds all parties to this conflict of their obligations under international humanitarian law to support the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure,’’ he said.
