The Cement Manufacturers Association in Ethiopia say cement factories are shutting down due to shortages in coal supplies and various inputs.
The problem has persisted in spite of reassurances from the ministry of Mines. The ministry says it has sent a letter to the association and to the cement factories requesting details of resources in short supply.
However, the ministry said it couldn’t solve the problem because there hasn’t been any response to its request yet.
East Cement, Ethio Cement, Habesha Cement have been affected by the dearth of supplies; whereas it is also indicated that if the problem is not addressed, inevitably the country’s cement production will continue to decline.
A member of the Cement Manufacturers Association, who spoke on condition of anonymity said that cement factories shut down production due to lack of resources and different problems, while some of them are producing at half their installed capacities.
