Félix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, arrived in Nairobi late Wednesday evening for security talks, two weeks after his previous visit.
He was in Nairobi earlier this month to sign the treaty for the DRC’s accession to the East African Community with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is also the current EAC chairman.
He also attended a mini-summit on regional security in early April, which brought together the two leaders, as well as Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Rwandan President Paul Kagame.
According to Tshisekedi’s office, five heads of state will attend the mini-summit, which will “lead to a commitment by the member nations.”
The return of the M23 insurrection, as well as other local and foreign armed organizations still lurking in eastern DRC and destabilizing the region, are some of the topics that could be tackled.
Also, two weeks ago, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta met with her Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) counterpart Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi on Friday, during which the two leaders discussed projects in their respective nations.
Mrs Tshisekedi was informed by First Lady Margaret Kenyatta that her Beyond Zero program will continue its charitable efforts after President Uhuru Kenyatta leaves office.
The Margaret Kenyatta Institute for Gender and Social Development, which was just launched, focuses on women’s empowerment by providing them with resources, education, and healthcare facilities, according to the Kenyan First Lady.
