Deputy President and Kenya Kwanza Alliance presidential aspirant, William Ruto has finally unveiled Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate in the country’s much anticipated 2022 presidential election.
Mathira Member of Parliament Gachagua was named Ruto’s aspirant on Sunday, ending the political tension and guessing game that has trailed the process.
Dr Ruto, while disclosing his running mate, stated that Kenya Kwanza had unified the agenda of different parties to solidify and stick closely to the economic blueprint of Kenya Kwanza, in a meeting that lasted 17 hours.
The top presidential candidate, whose party, the United Democratic Movement (UDA) failed to unveil its running mate as anticipated on Saturday, had to hold a crisis meeting with his top strategists until midnight, as the press hung heavily outside at his Karen official residence, waiting for the outcome.
Now that the mystery behind Ruto’s running mate – Gachagua has been disclosed, heads have turned in Raila Odinga’s direction, as the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition party presidential candidate is also set to reveal his running mate today during a rally at the historic Kamukunji grounds in Nairobi.
Odinga on Friday, received three shortlisted names, which sources have said are: Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth, and the vibrant Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua.
So far, Ms Karua, a veteran of Kenya’s pro-democracy movements of the 1990s, ranks as the highest contender, as most opinion polls have seen her contending fiercely way ahead of Kalonzo Musyoka and Peter Kenneth.
