Kenya’s Deputy President, William Ruto on Thursday, swallowed his pride, and finally asked his boss, President Uhuru Kenyatta to forgive him in spite of what has transpired between them in the past years.
DP Ruto, who spoke at the 19th National Prayer Breakfast, blamed his shortcomings for the inability to live up to expectation in the last 10 years, while urging the president to accept his plea for forgiveness.
He stated that his intention is to participate in the August 9 General Elections without ill feelings towards anyone.
“I also know that serving as a Deputy President, I may have fallen short of the expectations of my boss President Uhuru Kenyatta. My good friend, I ask for your forgiveness.
“We are all human beings and the Bible says that we have fallen short. Where we have fallen short to all, I ask for forgiveness and all those who have wronged me, I forgive you with a clean heart so that we can transition into the next phase minus any debt from anybody,” he said.
The presidential aspirant also pleaded with Kenyans to forgive him for his behaviour.
“As people of Kenya, we have failed you in certain aspects because we have not been united as we should be, we have failed in some areas. We ask, and specifically myself, I ask for your forgiveness.”
Ruto went on to recount the incidents that severed his loyalty to Kenyatta, especially when he started side lining him, and chose to work with others instead.
“I have supported the President since 2002, until he told me that he no longer [needed] my advice. Even now, he has realised that the people whom he gave work to have done nothing. The only thing I would want to request, let no one blame me for whatever I have not been involved in.
He insisted that those accusing him of absconding from duty ought to swallow their words, considering he was discharging his duties as much as he could, despite the president’s attitude towards him.
“When I used to help President Uhuru Kenyatta, there was no gap anywhere. Currently, there are people who are trying to lecture me that I have absconded from my responsibilities, let them tell me what I was assigned and I didn’t discharge,” he stated.
DP Ruto is vying for the elective position of the president of Kenya, alongside his running mate Rigathi Gachagua.
They will be running against the Raila Odinga and Martha Karua team. He revealed that whatever the outcome of the election come August 9, he would take it in good fate.
