Team Nigeria won the gold medal at the female 4x100m event at the African Senior Athletics Championship currently ongoing in Mauritius.
The Nigerians were surprising winners at the finals having qualified into the event with the slowest time of all the nations involved.
The quartet of 100m hurdles winner, Tobi Amusan, Praise Idamadudu, Tina Godbless, and Praise Ofoku crossed the line in a time of 44.45s to clinch gold.
Nigeria is currently placed third on the medals table behind South Africa and Kenya who have won the highest number of gold medals so far.
At the 4x100m, Nigeria reclaimed its position as the best on the continent as the quartet of Joy Udo-Gabriel, Blessing Okagbare, Amusan and Rosemary Chukwuma won in Asaba in 2018. It’s only one member of the team that has made the 2022 winners.
In the men’s category, the quartet of Raymond Ekevwo, Nicholas Mabilo, Ogho-Oghene Egwero and Seye Ogunlewe were unable to make podium finish as they finished fourth with a time of 39.98s.
At the Discus event, Chioma Onyekwere also won the gold medal as she consolidated on her national record. Obiageri Amechi won the bronze medal in the event.
Nigeria had won the silver medal in the 4x400m mixed relays.
