The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has approved nine gubernatorial candidates to run for the position of Nairobi governor on August 9, 2022.
Prior to the debate, which is set to begin on July 11, 2022 at 6pm, News Central has created a succinct list of each gubernatorial candidate’s profile.
Johnson Sakaja
Sakaja was born on February 2, 1985 in Nairobi (37 years). He has held the office of Senator of Nairobi County since 2017 to date. Founding chairman of The National Party (TNA) in 2012.
According to a recent Infotrak poll, incumbent Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja is considered to be the most liked candidate.
Polycarp Igathe
The 50-year-old Kenyan businessman, politician, and corporate leader serves as Equity Group Holdings’ Chief Commercial Officer.
Igathe has been perceived as a business figure with a strong godfather because of how easily he transitions between jobs.
He began working as a finance officer in Australia after graduating from the University of Nairobi in 1995. He later returned to Kenya and started working for Coca-Cola.
Agnes Kagure
She is a successful entrepreneur and executive in the insurance industry who is running unaffiliated for governor of Nairobi.
The businesswoman boasts of her humble beginnings, having worked as a housemaid in Nairobi before breaking into the insurance industry and becoming well-known.
Kagure, one of the candidates for governor aiming a Jubilee Party ticket, remained in the race after the party named Polycarp Igathe as its nominee.
Denise Kodhe
Kodhe is a seasoned journalist who has served as an African Union diplomat. He served as Director-General of the Institute for Democracy and Leadership in Africa and oversaw one organization (IDEA for Africa).
The LDP Party’s nominee describes himself as a philanthropist who helps Saidia Furaha Children’s Home care for orphans and vulnerable kids.
Esther Thairu Waringa
She is running for the position of Nairobi governor on an independent slate and serves as chair of the Independent Candidates Forum of Kenya.
Harman Singh Grewal
The law specialist, who is running for Nairobi governor as the youngest candidate, describes herself as a legal brand developer who assists attorneys in generating leads while educating the public.
In the business arena, Harman has held positions as a teacher at Premier Academy in Nairobi, a co-founder of Asilimia, a project development manager for Smart Friends, the head of operations for We make Impact, and a real estate manager for Jasar.
Kenneth Nyamwamu
A data analyst and licensed nurse, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate for Nairobi governor is the party’s front-runner.
He mostly has an American base of operations.
Nancy Wambui Mwadime
She worked as a real estate developer for Costa Homes and is running for the position of city council member on the Usawa Kwa Wote Party’s ticket.
Cleophas Kiio Mutua
Mutua, who is running for governor under the Ford Kenya Party, previously served as the ICT Director at the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.
