Following airstrikes by Russian forces against locations in Ukraine, Angolan President João Lourenço on Monday held a phone call with President Volodymyr Zelensky over the escalating situation in Ukraine.
“The military conflict in which Ukraine has been involved since last February was the topic discussed,” the Angolan presidency said.
The Ukrainian president said they deliberated on important issues of mutual co-operation within the UN.
President Zelensky has been reaching out to African leaders to deepen diplomatic support against Russia’s military operation in Ukraine.
Angola was one of the many African countries that abstained from a UN resolution in March that condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The White House has said in a statement that US President Joe Biden has promised Ukraine advanced air defense systems after Russian missiles rained down on the capital Kyiv and other cities in the country.
