The new British Prime Minister is Rishi Sunak, a former Chancellor of the Exchequer who has led the Conservative Party since October 2022.
This took place not long after Penny Mordaunt withdrew from the contest, following in the footsteps of Boris Johnson.
Recently, Mordaunt withdrew her name from consideration since she was unable to secure the required 100 MPs before the nomination period expired at 2pm British Time.
Boris Johnson, who was also running, withdrew on Sunday after failing to secure the necessary number of votes.
Liz Truss will formally relinquish her position as prime minister to Sunak, most likely on Tuesday, when Truss will have served 50 days in office.
Sunak has consistently been a candidate for the position. Recall that in the leadership matchup versus Truss in the summer, the former Chancellor finished second. It is hardly surprising that, as of Monday morning, he has the support of more over half of the British parliament.
