Tema metropolis in the Greater Accra Region in Ghana became deserted following a lockdown directive from the Tema Traditional Council (TTC) over the funeral rites of the late Tema Mantse, Osonnaa Nii Adjei Kraku II.
The rites for the late Tema Mantse started on Wednesday night, with the river crossing.
Tema residents in the Greater Accra Region were advised to remain indoors ahead of total blackout to honour late chief.
All trading activities within the Tema Traditional Area were to close from Friday, October 28 to Saturday, October 29 in honour of the final funeral rites of the paramount Chief.
Educational institutions issued notices for holidays on Friday October 28, 2022 as schools had to close.
Residents witnessed a spectacle of staff-wielding traditionalists in processions,mourning with pots on their heads.
Scheduled blackouts were also reported in Ashaiman from 7pm to 12am in line with Ga customs as a sign of honour to the deceased chief.
Prior to that, staff-wielding traditionalists in ceremonial regalia patrolled the streets with some carrying pots on their heads in mourning. Many others sang dirges.
The spokesperson for the Tema Traditional Council, Nii Amarh Somponu, announced the sad news on March 18, 2020.
