Egypt sent a message to India on Monday offering its deepest sympathies for the loss of lives caused by the collapse of a bridge in Gujarat, a state in western India, which claimed the lives of more than 140 people.
Egypt, its people, and its government expressed their complete solidarity and support to the Indian people and government over this unfortunate catastrophe, according to a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry on Monday.
At least 134 people died following the collapse of a suspension bridge in Gujarat, western India, officials said on Monday.
Harsh Sanghavi, Gujarat’s home minister, told reporters that the death toll rose from 68 on Sunday to 132 early on Monday as search operations continued.
Authorities worry that as rescue crews continue their search, the figures could rise. According to the information ministry, 177 people have so far been saved, and 19 are undergoing medical attention.
Before being reopened to the public this week, the Morbi bridge, which was constructed in the 19th century during British administration, had been closed for about six months for repairs.
According to local media, the bridge fell on Sunday while hundreds of tourists were on it for the Chhath Puja and Diwali festivals.
