Guinea’s former president Alpha Conde could face corruption charges after the ruling junta ordered prosecutors to take legal action against him and 180 other government officials.
The list of 188 officials includes former prime minister Ibrahima Kassory Fofana and the former ministers of defence, economy and trade as well as presidential advisors, according to a letter to public prosecutors.
The letter disclosed that in the meantime, the bank accounts of the listed individuals had been frozen adding that “it is imperative to open judicial investigations to clarify the origin of the funds in these various accounts.”
However, this will not be the first time that the former president will be facing legal action, meanwhile, several former officials are in detention as part of the junta’s anti-corruption campaign. Some people in detention have also been listed in the Thursday letter.
The ruling junta which overthrew Conde about a year ago is focused on ridding the West African country of endemic corruption.
Military leader Colonel Mamady Doumbouya who appointed himself president has promised to restore civilian rule within two years from January 2023.
