Ghana’s Black Stars are eliminated from the World Cup after losing to Uruguay. It was a critical encounter in Group H, with Ghana knowing that a win would put them through and Uruguay needing a win to stand a chance of qualifying.
Despite beating Ghana, Uruguay was eliminated from the World Cup on goals scored, finishing third behind South Korea in Group H. Uruguay striker, Luis Suarez played a key part in both of Uruguay’s goals and was in tears after the final whistle, in what may be his final international match for his country. Giorgio de Arrascaeta scored both goals, the first a close-range header and the second a beautiful volley, but South Korea’s 2-1 victory over group winners Portugal was enough to propel them to second place in Group H.
Suarez, whose handball in their first encounter 12 years ago helped his team advance, saw his effort fall into the path of De Arrascaeta for the goal before the experienced former Liverpool striker followed it up with a beautiful assist for the second.
Ghana could not take the lead against Uruguay as captain Andre Ayew missed a penalty kick. In the 20th minute, the Black Stars were given a penalty for a foul on Mohammed Kudus, and captain Andre Ayew stepped up to take the resulting attempt. But Sergio Rochet easily stopped the poor shot from the Al Sadd player, and Uruguay quickly took the lead.
The miss brought back memories of Ghana’s penalty miss against Uruguay in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Asamoah Gyan failed to score from the spot, and Uruguay advanced then. Gyan has been receiving criticism since then, but supporters would definitely now turn the heat on Ayew after his botched effort.
Uruguay and South Korea both finished with a goal differential of zero, although the Asian squad scored four goals in three games, while the South American team only scored two against Ghana.
