The Imo State high court housing both the high court and a magistrates’ court in Orlu, has been reportedly burnt down with several sensitive documents destroyed.
This is coming barely few days after the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Owerri was burnt down by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), police confirmed.
A staff member of the judiciary, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said all the files in the building were burnt.
There is a security checkpoint as well as the police divisional headquarter close to the Orlu high court is close.
In 2018, the high court was set ablaze. On December 1, the Orlu office of INEC was set burnt down in the same manner.
Orlu Branch Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Barnabas Munonye, who confirmed the incident, described it as unfortunate.
Munonye said that his attention was drawn to the incident by the administrative secretary of the association in the early hours of Saturday.
Spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, CSP Mike Abattam, who also confirmed the incident, said that police had launched an investigation into the incident.
