Following months of trial Canadian rapper, Daystar Peterson popularly known as Tory Lanez has been found guilty of three felonies in the 2020 shooting of hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion.
A Los Angeles jury found the 30year old rapper guilty of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. The counts are heavy and could lead to up to 22 years in prison.
American rapper Megan Thee Stallion who was wounded with bullet fragments in her feet testified during the trial against Lanez. The 27 year old female rapper revealed the Tory Lanez fired a handgun at the back of her feet and shouted for her to dance. The billboard topping said the two had gotten into a dispute that got especially heated when she began insulting his music. She further stated needing surgery to remove bullet fragments from her feet after the 2020 incident.
Prosecutors applauded Meghan’s courage to come forward in the closing arguments. Although Lanez father, Sonstar Peterson openly disputed the court’s judgment even creating a scene at the courthouse, the incident between both musicians had long sparked a cultural controversy.
Conversations around the reluctance of Black victims to speak to police, the protection of Black women, gender politics in hip-hop, and online toxicity have continued since.
