Prominent Nigerian artist, Olawale Olofooro, also known as Brymo has apologised again for making inflammatory remarks about the southeast, stating the Igbo presidency would be a “pipe dream,” meaning it would be hopeless.
Brymo has recently faced controversy from the general public over his remark that the Igbo presidency is nothing more than a pipe dream as long as prominent Igboland figures continue to debate Biafra.
“As long as there (are) talks by prominent people from Igboland about Biafra, an Igbo presidency will be a pipe dream,” Brymo tweeted
Brymo’s words sparked an immediate outcry from the public, particularly in the country’s southeast and among supporters of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.
A petition was started by Charles Ogundele to prevent Brymo from being nominated for the 2023 All Africa Music Award (AFRIMA), and it has garnered 28,000 signatures.
“His (Brymo) actions spark disunity and hatred in attention there. Preventing him from winning the All Africa Music Award would send a strong message to him, and people like him, that he can’t get away with such blatant ethnic bigotry,” according to the petition.
Brymo, however, released an apologetic message on his verified Instagram account writing “I did not insult the tribe, I am sorry to anyone who it sounded as such to. I was trying to weigh into a very important matter.”
Brymo then tweeted on Monday, “Forgive my assertions that came across as bigoted spewings against the Igbo tribe, I did not mean to do harm, I am sorry!! .”
