A 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and concession agreement for a 50MW PV solar facility have been signed by the government of Ivory Coast.
The 50 MW project will help Ivory Coast achieve its goals for clean energy by producing more than 85 GWh of clean energy annually, which is enough to power about 350,000 people. The project is being fully constructed by AMEA Power using a Build-Own-Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model for an approximate $60 million total investment.
The project, the nation’s first solar Independent Power Project (IPP), will be situated at Bondoukou, a city in the northeastern province of Gontougo, 420 kilometres from Abidjan.
Compagnie Ivoirienne d’Electricité, which is in charge of maintaining the nation’s electrical infrastructure, will be the project’s offtaker.
Tiemoko Meyliet Koné, vice president of Ivory Coast, attended the signing ceremony that was held in conjunction with Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
The concession deal was signed by Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, and Mamadou Sangafowa-Coulibaly, Minister of Mines, Petroleum, and Energy of the Ivory Coast.
Al Nowais declared that they are happy to assist Ivory Coast in achieving its goals for clean energy, which would result in investment, job creation, and sustainable development. “The nation is going through an economic and social change that will be fueled by the advancement of renewable energy and is representative of the continent as a whole.
“AMEA Power has a proven track record of delivering projects in West Africa. The region has a great amount of untapped potential for renewable energy and green hydrogen. As AMEA Power expands its investments across Africa, we will work in partnership with governments, businesses and local communities to develop projects,” said Al Nowais.
The Mohammed Bin Zayed Solar Power Plant in Togo is being expanded from 50MW to 70MW by the firm, making it the largest solar facility in West Africa. This plant will be supplemented by battery storage to increase the availability of clean electricity at night.
The Government of Ivory Coast intends to increase the proportion of renewable energy in the nation’s electricity generation mix to 42% by 2030 as part of its strategic strategy.
