Lionel Messi, who led Argentina to World Cup victory in Qatar, has been named the best male athlete at the 2022 The Best FIFA Awards. Messi scored in every round of the competition, a feat he had never accomplished in his international career before Qatar. His two goals in the thrilling final in Lusail stand out as his most memorable contributions.
The captain of the Albiceleste earned the Golden Ball award as the best player of the competition and set a record by winning it twice, the first time being in Brazil in 2014.
Messi has not yet helped Paris Saint-Germain achieve a team trophy this season despite contributing a whopping 33 goals in 28 games.
In addition to his FIFA World Player of the Year honour from 2009, Messi earned The Best Men’s Player of FIFA for the second time since the competition’s rebranding in 2016.
With only the 2018 trophy going to a different player, Luka Modric, his second victory puts him on par with Cristiano Ronaldo (2016, 2017) and Robert Lewandowski (2020, 2021), who have won all but one of the awards.
