Fact checkers have confirmed that a viral video circulating online, which appears to show a Kenyan government official chiding CNN journalist Larry Madowo during a live interview, is false.
The video was created by Mungai Wamutego, a content creator and digital strategist, and posted on his social media pages. The interviewee in the doctored version was identified as Wamutego himself, not a Kenyan government official.
In the video, Madowo asked his interviewee, “You said that everybody is free in Uganda and yet you, as Internal affairs minister in March, presented a list of 177 people who are under military detention to the parliament and later President Museveni said at least 50 people have been arrested for a treasonable act of opposition, is this the sign of freedom to you.”
The interviewee, a young man (later identified as Mungai Wamutego) veered off the question and accused Madowo of speaking to a government official without decorum.
A quick search on Google and CNN websites showed that Madowo had an interview with Uganda’s Foreign Minister, General Jeje Odongo, not a Kenyan official, on Tuesday, August 24, 2021.
Madowo himself informed a Kenyan friend that the video had been edited and that he never had any interview with Wamutego.
The footage was edited to remove the visuals of Odongo and his audio responses from the footage, making it appear like a Kenyan official was threatening Madowo. Kenya government official did not threaten Madowo. Therefore, the claim is FALSE.
