The video of a Sudanese man publicly calling for the death of the UN’s envoy in Sudan, Volker Perthes, has alarmed the organisation, according to a statement.
The man suddenly accuses Perthes of meddling in the nation’s politics. The Sudanese government has been requested by the UN to look into the event.
Sudan is currently experiencing a political crisis as a result of leaders missing their deadline to form a civilian-led government this week. Current reform negotiations have been derailed by conflicts between military factions.
An elderly Sudanese man is heard on the tape, which has been making the rounds on social media, viciously attacking the UN representative before pleading for a fatwa to have him put to death.
The incident took place at a gathering of groups connected to Omar Al Bashir, the former president who was overthrown.
The event’s organisers said in a statement that the man’s remarks did not reflect their opinions.
Many demonstrators demanded that the German diplomat leave Sudan last year, accusing him and the UN of interfering with the nation’s politics.
Since the army under General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan overthrew a civilian administration in October 2021, Sudan has experienced almost weekly protests.
Due to disagreements among military factions, negotiations to transfer control from the military to a civilian-led government have come to a standstill.
