Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Alfred Mutua, has expressed concerns about the growing involvement of external forces in Sudan’s politics, stating that it has become increasingly difficult to achieve lasting peace. During a press briefing with his US counterpart, Antony Blinken, Dr Mutua specifically highlighted Russia and some Gulf countries for taking sides in the ongoing conflict. The two top diplomats were discussing the US-Kenya Strategic Partnership aimed at guiding future trade and economic relations between the two nations.
Dr Mutua emphasised that regardless of who is being supported, it is essential to ensure that the people of Sudan have stability. The African Union has already called for an immediate end to the fighting in Sudan and advocated for an inclusive and democratic transition of power.
The international community has expressed growing concerns over the situation in Sudan, with fears that external interference is complicating efforts to reach lasting peace. Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary has identified Russia and some Gulf countries as the main instigators in the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
Dr Mutua said the increasing presence of international forces in Sudan, makes it really challenging for the African Union and Inter-governmental Authority on Development (Igad) to find a solution to the crisis. Despite the African Union’s call for a peaceful democratic transition of power, the situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate rapidly, with security forces engaging in a fierce battle with civilians. He noted that it is crucial for the international community to collaborate and support the efforts towards finding lasting peace in Sudan.
