Kenya and Somalia officials have shown their support for the gradual reopening of three border posts connecting the two nations over a span of 90 days. These border points, situated in Garissa, Mandera, and Lamu counties, were closed during the administration of former President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2011 due to heightened attacks by the Al-Shabaab militants based in Somalia.
Kenya’s Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki, and his counterpart from Somalia, Mohamed Ahmed Sheikh, made the announcement following high-level consultations in Nairobi. The objective behind this move is to enhance cross-border cooperation and strengthen bilateral ties between Kenya and Somalia.
During their discussions, the officials also deliberated on the plans to establish contemporary and secure border infrastructure that would facilitate smooth trade, mobility, and the movement of people.
