Tanzanian President, John Magufuli says his country will export 700,000 tonnes of maize to Zimbabwe. This is to combat the effects of the drought affecting crop production in the country.
The sale of this crop will further boost the relationship between both countries. The U.N estimates that about a third of Zimbabwe’s 15 million people are in need of food assistance.
The sale is from surplus Tanzanian maize as the country harvested 16 million tonnes with local demand around 13 million tonnes. El Nino induced adverse weather had led to drought for some time in southern Africa.
