A 37-count criminal indictment against Donald Trump over his management of classified government records has been unsealed Friday. This was made public a day after the former president was indicted by a grand jury in U.S. District Court in Miami.
The indictment says Trump in 2021 shared classified documents to unauthorised people, after leaving office. The FBI raid of Trump’s Florida home last August exposed hundreds of classified documents, which he had failed to turn over to U.S. officials despite months of their efforts to recover them.
Trump’s valet, Walter Nauta, has also been charged in the same indictment, facing several similar charges as his superior. Nauta specifically faces charges of making false statements or representations.
Arraignment proceedings for Trump are scheduled to take place in Miami on Tuesday, which coincides with his 77th birthday. The indictment includes a total of thirty-one counts against Trump, primarily accusing him of willfully retaining national defense information.
Additionally, he is charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice, withholding and corruptly concealing documents or records, concealing a document during a federal investigation, engaging in a scheme to conceal, and making false statements and representations.
According to the indictment, “Upon leaving the White House, TRUMP orchestrated the transportation of numerous boxes, many of which contained classified documents, to his residence at The Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida.”
