Five tourist hotels in Paje coastal area, Unguja South in Zanzibar has been destroyed by fire which occurred on Saturday Night, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Gaudianus Felician Kamugisha confirmed on Sunday.
Kamugisha- Regional Police Commander (RPC) of the Unguja South Region said fire started from a kitchen of ‘Nest Hotel’ destroying the kitchenette, cafeteria, and Bar. It then jumped to other four adjoining hotels: Meraki Hotel destroying the reception area and Bar; and Drifters Zanzibar Hotel- destroying the restaurant.
Also affected are the Maisha Matamu Hotel with the Bar and restaurant’ burnt and Cristal Resort where five rooms were gutted.
“Fire fighters, Police and residents teamed up to fight the fire until around 3am. We managed to put out the fierce fire that was spreading across the area,” he said.
The cost of valuables and the cause of the fire are still being investigated. There are investigations along with whether the tourists’ Hotel with coconut leaves thatched roofs are insured.
In November 2021, vacationers and hotel workers escaped unhurt after four tourist hotels caught fire in Jambiani coastal area, Unguja South region in Zanzibar.
