In response to the recent unrest sparked by protests against the imprisonment of opposition figure Ousmane Sonko, the authorities in Senegal have taken action to suspend TikTok application. This decision comes in light of the application reportedly being used as a platform for disseminating hateful and subversive messages, which has raised concerns about the stability of the country.
On Monday, in the aftermath of Mr. Sonko’s detention on various charges, including incitement to insurrection, the nation witnessed protests that turned violent, leading to three fatalities in the south and suburbs of Dakar. Furthermore, two additional casualties occurred on Tuesday in Dakar due to an incendiary device attack on a bus. However, there is no apparent link between this attack and the protests against Mr. Sonko’s imprisonment.
In response to these incidents, the authorities decided to suspend the TikTok application, which they believe has become a preferred social network for those with ill-intentions, intent on spreading hateful and subversive messages. This suspension is in effect until further notice and is aimed at mitigating the potential risks posed by the misuse of the platform.
“It has been noted that the TikTok application is the social network preferred by ill-intentioned people to disseminate hateful and subversive messages threatening the stability of the country,” said Moussa Bocar Thiam, Minister of Communication and the Digital Economy, in a statement.
Amnesty International has voiced concerns over the internet restrictions imposed during these events, considering it as an infringement on freedom of information. The organization calls on the authorities to restore internet access to its citizens.
This is the third legal procedure faced by Mr. Sonko, who is also a declared candidate for the 2024 presidential elections. Legal experts predict that he could face a sentence of five to 20 years in prison if convicted. His previous conviction on June 1 resulted in a two-year prison sentence and triggered significant unrest in Senegal, leading to the loss of lives.
The situation remains tense as the country grapples with the aftermath of these events. The authorities are working to maintain stability and address the concerns raised by citizens and international organizations alike.
