A former military leader of Nigeria, Abdulsalami Abubakar alongside the Sultan of Sokoto Muhammadu Sa’adu Abubakar are leading a team of mediators from the West African regional bloc, ECOWAS.
ECOWAS says its delegation in Niger Republic seeks to negotiate with the leaders of last week’s coup.
Ahead of a meeting involving West African defence officials in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, an ECOWAS spokesperson said a military solution to reverse the coup would be a last resort.
The bloc had warned on Sunday, that it was giving Niger’s new rulers a 7-Day ultimatum to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum.
