Nigeria’s military high command has refuted claims of receiving a plea to disrupt the democratic system of governance in the nation, asserting the military’s allegiance to President Bola Tinubu.
On Friday, the Defence Headquarters expressed dissatisfaction with remarks urging the Armed Forces to intervene in the democratic proceedings due to allegations of inadequate welfare among troops spanning various services.
However, on Sunday, the DHQ, through a statement issued by Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, asserted that the military had never been presented with the proposal to assume control of the government.
The statement declared, “The Defence Headquarters is alarmed by fabricated and disconcerting social media reports contorted to indicate that the Armed Forces of Nigeria had been approached to orchestrate a leadership transition in the nation.
“We wish to reiterate that the AFN neither received nor issued any such proclamation to any individual or group at any point. We believe this assertion has been concocted by those who harbor ill intentions for the nation. It is undoubtedly the malicious fabrication of a handful who are dissatisfied with the progress and prosperity of our beloved country.
“The AFN is completely at ease with democracy and remains devoted to the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The military is consistently prepared and willing to safeguard the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
The military high command disclosed that security operatives had initiated a search for those responsible for propagating the report.
“We call upon those propagating such falsities to cease immediately or face legal repercussions. The military, along with other security agencies, is actively pursuing these purveyors of disaster. We must all collaborate to fortify our democracy,” the statement concluded.
