On August 14, 2023, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, the leader of the military junta in Niger, clarified that the recent coup, which resulted in the overthrow of President Mohammad Bazoum, was undertaken with the intention of averting a looming danger that could have impacted both Niger Republic and Nigeria. General Tchiani’s remarks came as he received a delegation of Nigerian Islamic scholars who were sent to mediate the situation.
General Tchiani expressed his disappointment that ECOWAS leaders did not give the coup leaders a chance to explain their side of the story before issuing an ultimatum. He welcomed the Nigerian intervention team, consisting of prominent Islamic scholars, and expressed willingness to explore peaceful solutions to the political crisis.
The intervention team, led by Sheik Bala Lau, engaged in extensive discussions with General Tchiani in Niamey. The team’s goal was to encourage a peaceful resolution and prevent further escalation.
Both parties acknowledged the historical ties between Niger Republic and Nigeria, emphasising the need for amicable solutions. General Tchiani extended his apologies for not giving proper attention to a team sent by President Bola Tinubu, citing frustration over the ECOWAS ultimatum.
The Nigerian delegation highlighted the importance of peaceful resolution, aiming to prevent further turmoil. The Niger Republic’s Prime Minister, Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, indicated that talks with ECOWAS were on the horizon.
In a similar vein, the Catholic Bishops called on the Nigerian government to address internal challenges rather than engaging in conflicts with neighbouring countries. Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, the President of CBCN, urged leaders to focus on combating corruption, insecurity, and other issues affecting Nigeria.
As the situation unfolds, the emphasis remains on dialogue, diplomacy, and international cooperation to ensure a peaceful resolution in Niger Republic.
