There are mounting concerns as authorities in Cameroon prepare to open the floodgates of the Lagbo Dam situated on the Benue River.
This decision comes in response to the substantial rainfall within the dam’s catchment area in Northern Cameroon.
Given the impending dam release, officials from Cameroon are urging the Nigerian Agency to promptly initiate proactive measures.
These actions are essential to minimise potential damage and to raise awareness among residents in the affected regions, promoting vigilance and the adoption of necessary precautions.
Last year, devastating floods in Nigeria were impacted by water flowing from different tributaries into the River Benue due to heavy downpour.
Although many insinuated that the Lagbo dam water release was responsible for the devastating floods in Nigeria, the then Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu told Nigeria’s Parliamentary body on Water Resources that the water released from the Lagbo Dam in Cameroon contributed only about 1 percent to the floods in Nigeria.
