The Gabon coup leader, General Oligui Nguema, has been sworn in as interim leader.
Mutinous soldiers in Gabon declared their republican guard chief as the country’s leader on Wednesday, August 30.
The coup leaders announced on Gabon’s state TV that General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema had been unanimously chosen as the president of a transitional committee to lead the nation. Oligui is a cousin of Bongo.
General Nguema was named coup leader after they ousted Bongo from power, following the announcement of the presidential results.
The 12 military officers, members of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), made the announcement on national television and announced the cancellation of the elections last week Wednesday.
