In a heartbreaking incident, the Ayanshina family in Ojodu Abiodun, within the Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, is in mourning after their family-owned building collapsed during a downpour, tragically claiming the lives of their two daughters on Saturday.
The catastrophic event, it has been reported, resulted from a mudslide triggered by the heavy rain. Suliyat, aged 16, and her elder sister Nofisat, aged 25, found themselves trapped within the collapsed structure.
According to reports, the unfortunate incident occurred while the sisters were inside the building, which couldn’t withstand the force of the Saturday downpour and ultimately gave way.
Neighbours rushed to their aid but struggled to free the injured sisters, who remained trapped amidst the debris. After their painstaking rescue, both siblings were swiftly transported to the nearby Tomade Hospital, Ojodu Abiodun.
However, despite the efforts made to save them, Suliyat and Nofisat were declared dead by a doctor on duty, leaving the community in shock and grief.
An eyewitness from the neighbourhood, who chose to remain anonymous due to a lack of authorisation to speak for the family, expressed the community’s surprise at the sudden tragedy. He revealed that residents worked together to rescue the sisters, but sadly, their efforts couldn’t prevent the heartbreaking outcome.
The source shared, “The sisters were inside the house when the incident happened. We all jointly made efforts to rescue them from the wreckage. We immediately took them to the hospital. It’s so sad that we lost them.”
Subsequently, the family reported the matter to the police and insisted on burying the deceased in accordance with Islamic customs, a request that was confirmed by the state Public Relations Officer, Odutola Omolola
