Africa’s e-commerce company, Jumia, has announced that it will halt its food delivery service across Africa.
The renowned pan-African firm said the move to end the service was because the business has proved unprofitable.
Jumia placed the official end of the service on December end, 2023. The seven nations where it offers the service—Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, and Ivory Coast—are all impacted by the decision.
Jumia announced in a statement that food delivery was “a business with very challenging economics”, and made the decision to concentrate on the business’s physical goods division, where the most popular item on the company’s platform is mobile phones.
In 2019, Jumia became the first tech company with an emphasis on Africa to list on the New York Stock Exchange, about seven years after the company was founded in Nigeria by two French entrepreneurs.
