At least 26 people have been wounded after a Ukrainian village councilor set off hand grenades at a meeting, national police said Friday.
The attack happened at the headquarters of the village council of Keretsky in western Ukraine’s mountainous Zakarpattia axis.
A video posted by the police showed a man dressed in black stepping into the room of a council meeting during a heated debate.
The Ukrainian official then removed three hand grenades from his pockets, freed the safety lock and dropped them on the floor, triggering explosions as those at the meeting screamed.
“As a result, 26 people were wounded, six of whom are in grave condition,” the police statement said, adding that physicians were trying to resuscitate the man who threw the grenades.
The Ukrainian Secret Service (SBU) has launched a terrorism investigation, the national police said, and an investigation into the illegal handling of weapons, has equally been opened.
CCTV footage showed that the man had walked in more than one hour and thirty minutes into the debate and stood by the door, before taking out the grenade.
The room went up in flames with several people struggling to escape, while others remained injured, flat on the floor. Many Ukrainians acquired weapons due to the war with Russia.
