A soldier from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is being held by police in the Kikuube district on suspicion of assaulting a civilian and causing eye damage.
Benjamin Ngabire, a member of Battalion 51 in the Third Division, is identified as the suspect. He had come to the village for leave.
The victim has been named as Emmanuel Twine, a resident of the Nyairongo Trading Centre in the Kikuube district’s Kabwoya sub-county.
The chairman of Nyairongo village, Desire Nkurunziza, claims that on December 14, 2023, at around ten in the morning, Twine was attacked while travelling from Nyairongo trading centre to Sayuni sub-village.
Nkurunziza says the suspect used a baton to hit the victim on the left eye.
The suspect was detained at Kyarushesha Police Post before he was transferred to Kikuube district police station.
The Albertine Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Julius Allan Hakiza, confirmed this morning that the suspect was in police custody.
