Honourable Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, declares that the 2024 budget is slated for passage on Saturday, December 30, 2023. The announcement comes as the House resumes plenary on Tuesday, December 19.
During the session, the Speaker conveys a message from the Committee on Appropriations to various House committees, emphasising the imperative for them to conclude and submit their reports on budget defence by government agencies before 8 p.m. on December 19, 2023.
The Speaker outlines that subsequent budget-related activities, including compilation, processing, and harmonisation, will occur in the interim.
Recalling that plenary was suspended on December 1st for the budget proposal defence, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented a budget of N27.5 trillion for the 2024 fiscal year in November. The 2024 budget, themed “The Budget of Renewed Hope,” aims to foster job-rich economic growth, macro-economic stability, a conducive investment environment, improved human capital development, poverty reduction, and increased access to social security.
The proposed budget awaits scrutiny and deliberation in a joint session of the National Assembly for final approval.
