Liberian President George Weah has taken steps to reverse his country’s vote against a UN resolution calling for a Gaza ceasefire, according to Liberia’s Information Ministry.
Liberia was the sole African state and one of only ten countries to reject the UN’s call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Palestine on December 12.
The Information Ministry stated that Liberian diplomats voted without the backing of President Weah, who has the final say over the country’s foreign policy. The ministry emphasised Weah’s commitment to peace and has requested a reversal of Liberia’s vote in favour of the Gaza ceasefire.
Before the UN vote, President Weah had written to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in November, urging restraint and consideration for civilians affected by the crisis.
Weah, a former international soccer star, is set to step down as president after losing a re-election bid in November. Despite allegations of corruption during his presidency, Weah’s acceptance of electoral defeat has raised hopes for a smooth transition of power in Liberia.
