In an interview with the Russian state RIA news agency published on Tuesday, Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui announced that Beijing is prepared to enhance energy cooperation with Russia across all phases of production.
Zhang emphasised China’s aspiration to extend collaboration throughout the entire energy industry production chain. He highlighted the enduring commitment of both countries to principles of mutual trust and mutual benefit in the face of global energy market fluctuations and external risks, making a positive contribution to global energy security.
The interview script, available on the Chinese Embassy website, revealed that discussions between the two nations are underway regarding Russia’s proposed Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline. Zhang specified that talks encompass various aspects, including technology, business, and the mode of cooperation for the project.
“Both sides need to conduct rigorous, scientific, and systematic research and demonstration for such a large-scale project,” Zhang remarked.
The envoy advocated for an upstream and downstream integration mode of cooperation for the new gas link project, emphasising the extension from pure trade to the entire industrial chain. This approach aligns with China’s expansive outlook on the natural gas consumption market.
Zhang expressed China’s hope for establishing a longer-term and more stable mode of cooperation with Russia, seeking substantial progress in the project at the earliest opportunity.
Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin’s upcoming visit to Beijing, where he will hold talks with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and meet President Xi Jinping, underscores the continued diplomatic engagement between the two nations, as announced by Russia’s government on Monday.
