The United States has reportedly turned down a recent Israeli request to acquire new Apache attack helicopters, as disclosed by Israeli media on Tuesday, citing information from security sources. The request was made in the past few weeks and was reiterated during the visit of US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin to Israel last week, according to Yedioth Ahronoth.
“The IDF (Israeli army) has requested Apache attack helicopters from the United States but has been denied so far,” the newspaper stated, referencing sources within the security apparatus. The helicopters were sought to enhance the military’s aerial operations.
This development occurs amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza, where Israel has been conducting airstrikes since a cross-border attack by Hamas on October 7. The Gaza health authorities report casualties, with at least 20,674 Palestinians killed, predominantly women and children, and 54,536 others injured.
While the reasons for the US denial were not specified in the reports, it adds a layer of complexity to the military dynamics in the region. It’s noteworthy that Washington has provided significant military support to Israel during the Gaza conflict, including shipments of weapons and equipment via cargo planes and ships.
