The Ondo state government has announced a three-day mourning period for late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, who drew his last breath early Wednesday after a protracted illness.
The government also ordered for the national flag in all establishments in the state to be flown at half-mast to mark the solemn period.
The newly sworn-in Governor of Ondo state, Lucky Aiyedatiwa described Akeredolu’s demise as a huge loss to the state and its people. He furthered declared that December 28 to December 30 as days of mourning his late boss.
Aiyedatiwa who was sworn in just hours after his principal’s death, assured the people of his commitment to sustaining the legacy left behind through hard work and unity of purpose.
“Today’s event has placed a burden on all of us to pull together and stay together as one because we have the onerous responsibility to continue to sustain the legacies of Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, CON, which was good governance.
“Our leader and governor, during his time embarked upon several landmark projects, many of which have been completed and several ones ongoing.
“We now have the responsibility to complete them. It is to the credit of Arakunrin Akeredolu, that the state now has a flyover in Ore, while the one in Akure is ongoing,” he said.
The 67-year-old former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and two-time Ondo state Governor died from protracted prostate cancer while still undergoing treatment, the Ondo state government disclosed on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the NBA has paid tribute to its former leader, describing him as “one of the most influential and courageous presidents ever to lead the NBA.”
