In a bid to enhance security, safety, and reduce crimes associated with commercial motorcycle usage in Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde has presented 15,000 free reflective jackets to registered commercial motorcyclists, commonly known as “Okada riders,” in Ibadan, the state capital.
This initiative follows the earlier registration of operators in the state, aligning with the administration’s focus on security under Omituntun 2.0 and the Roadmap to Sustainable Development (2022-2027).
Representing the governor at the presentation held at the Western Hall, Secretariat, Ibadan, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Professor Babatunde Musbaudeen, emphasised the government’s commitment to the safety of lives and property. The reflective jackets, equipped with a security barcode, serve as a means of proper monitoring by government agencies.
Musbaudeen urged registered riders to comply with the directive to wear reflective jackets, emphasising that those not adhering to this requirement are not registered and may face challenges and arrests by security operatives. He called on leaders of the Okada Riders’ Association to collaborate with the government for effective results in enhancing road safety and security.
The commissioner also highlighted the need for commercial motorcyclists to paint their motorcycles in the approved colour for easy identification, helping to distinguish lawful riders from those engaging in unlawful activities.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, praised Governor Makinde’s considerate approach towards commercial transporters, particularly Okada riders. Despite stricter positions taken by other states, Makinde, he noted, has maintained a more liberal stance, taking into account the livelihoods of the riders and their impact on the state’s economy.
Stakeholders at the event, including the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle, Tricycle Owners, Riders, and Repairers Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), Oyo State Chapter, commended the governor for his compassion and leniency towards Okada riders. They pledged cooperation and collaboration with the state government to improve safety and security on the roads.
