The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) led by the Hon. Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu on Monday, convened the first meeting of 2024 with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) ahead of the upcoming bye-elections in February.
The electoral body shared pictures on X as members convened for the meeting.
The gathering aims to adequately prepare the electoral body’s officials for the bye/rerun elections scheduled to be held on February 3, 2024, across the country.
Key areas of concentration to ensure a successful run of the upcoming elections include security, logistics, as well as the recruitment and training of ad-hoc staff.
Few days ago, INEC National Commissioner, Sam Olumekun in a statement, explained the decision to proceed with the bye/rerun elections.
He also disclosed that the elections will be held across nine states in Nigeria.
The statement partly read:
“These elections will be held on Saturday 3rd February 2024 across nine States of the Federation covering two Senatorial Districts (Ebonyi South and Yobe East); four Federal Constituencies (Shanga/Ngaski/Yauri Federal Constituency of Kebbi State, Surulere I Federal Constituency of Lagos State, Akoko North East/Akoko North West Federal Constituency of Ondo State and Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency of Taraba State); and three State Constituencies (Guma I State Constituency of Benue State, Chibok State Constituency of Borno State and Chikun State Constituency of Kaduna State).”
The bye-elections will be held to replace dead or resigned members of the National and State Houses of Assembly.
