United States’ President Joe Biden has strongly condemned the recent criticism of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) by his potential 2024 election rival, Donald Trump, labelling it as “dumb,” “un-American,” and “shameful.”
The Democrat leader rebuked Trump for suggesting that he would support Russia in attacking any NATO member failing to meet its defence spending obligations.
Biden emphasised the pressing need to pass a $95 billion foreign aid package for US allies, including $60 billion designated for Ukraine. While the bill has cleared the Senate, it faces challenges in the House of Representatives.
Speaking from the White House, Biden warned that failure to pass the aid package, especially amid Trump’s provocative comments, would play into the hands of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He denounced Trump’s statements as “dangerous,” highlighting that no previous US president had capitulated to a Russian leader in such a manner.
In a firm declaration, Biden asserted his unwavering commitment never to submit to a Russian dictator, emphasising the folly, shame, and peril inherent in such actions.
Trump’s recent remarks, made during a rally in South Carolina, criticised NATO members for their delayed payments, with Biden characterising his predecessor’s approach as akin to treating the military alliance as a protection racket.
