Henry Rono, the former multiple world record holder from Kenya, has passed away at the age of 72.
The announcement was made by Athletics Kenya, stating that Rono succumbed to a brief illness earlier today at a hospital in Nairobi, the capital city.
Henry Rono made sporting history in 1978 when he broke four world records in just 81 days. He achieved world best times in the 3000m, 5000m, 10,000m, and 3000m steeplechase disciplines. Additionally, he broke his own world record for the 5000m in 1981.
After his illustrious career, Rono relocated to the United States in 1986, where he lived for over three decades before returning to Kenya in 2019.
This news comes as Kenya and the global athletics community are still mourning the recent passing of marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum, who tragically lost his life in a road accident last Sunday.
Further details about Rono’s death and funeral arrangements will be provided by his family and the Kenyan government as they become available.
