Ese Brume of Nigeria won gold in the African Games‘ women’s long jump event, jumping a record 6.92 metres to defend her title on Thursday night in Accra, Ghana’s capital.
She won the title in Rabat, Morocco, in 2019 and repeated her success in Ghana five years later.
Brume‘s first effort was good enough for gold on the night, and her compatriot Prestina Ochonogor took bronze. She jumped 6.67 metres.
Burkina Faso’s Koala Marthe won bronze. Ruth Usoro of Nigeria, who placed fourth with a leap of 6.62m, had a terrible night.
Nigeria dominated not only the long jump on Thursday, but also other events. Obiageri Amachi won the discus throw with a personal best of 58.93m. Her compatriot Chioma Onyekwere won the silver medal.
Kemi Francis-Petersen finished second in the women’s heptathlon event with 5268 points, trailing only Ahouanwanou Odile of Benin Republic.
