Glencore, a global miner, has announced that board member Peter Coates would retire on May 29, following a 30-year tenure with the company.
He joined the Glencore board in 2011 and has served as chair of the health and safety committee.
John Wallington has been appointed as an independent non-executive director of the business, starting June 1. He brings more than 40 years of expertise in the mining industries of South Africa, Australia, Colombia, and Canada.
He spent the majority of his career with Anglo American, including as worldwide CEO of Anglo Coal.
Glencore chairperson Kalidas Madhavpeddi comments that the company must have several nonexecutive directors who know the industry well and who can appraise and challenge decision-making from a technical and commercial perspective.
